Toshiba ha descubierto la manera de cambiar de emisora o de canción del CD mientras se conduce sin tener que levantar las manos del volante.
El gigante japonés está desarrollando una tecnología que reconoce el rostro del conductor y obedece sus gestos, con lo que poner en marcha los limpiaparabrisas será tan sencillo como guiñar un ojo.
Presentada en el Automotive Engineering Expo, en Japón, la tecnología permite que el coche observe al conductor.
Toshiba lleva aplicando el reconocimiento facial en portátiles desde hace apenas un año, con la intención de eliminar la necesidad de teclear contraseñas.
En el coche, el sistema está pensado para aumentar la seguridad del conductor. Una pequeña cámara colocada sobre el salpicadero controla en todo momento las pupilas del piloto, la dirección de su mirada, la manera de mover la cabeza y la frecuencia de parpadeos. Todos estos datos se introducen en un ordenador que compara lo que la cámara ve con una base de datos que guarda las expresiones faciales. De esa manera, la máquina puede detectar las necesidades del piloto.
El portavoz de la compañía, Hiroko Mochida, no duda de que la tecnología salvará muchas vidas. "El sistema de reconocimiento facial servirá para determinar el estado del conductor y saber si está distraído o somnoliento", dice.
La tecnología puede llegar a ser útil, pero quedan algunos flecos por solucionar: ¿qué ocurre si el conductor lleva gafas de sol? ¿Y si es de noche o hay poca luz? Mochida asegura que el sistema se está perfeccionando y que, aunque diferentes marcas como Mercedes Benz ya están interesadas, no hay planes inmediatos para su venta.
