El cáncer de próstata sueleser más agresivo en los hombres mayores, según los resultadosde un estudio publicado en Journal of Urology.
"Los pacientes mayores corren riesgo de cáncer de próstataagresivo y no sólo de enfermedad indolora como se creíaanteriormente", dijo a Reuters Health el doctor Stephen A.Brassell, del Centro Médico Walter Reed, en Washington.
"El control preventivo y el tratamiento de los hombresmayores conduciría a una mejor supervivencia a este cáncer",añadió.
Brassell y sus colegas revisaron los patronesclínico-patológicos del cáncer de próstata en 12.081 pacientes,de los cuales 3.650 (el 30,2 por ciento) tenía 70 años o más,según la Base de Datos del Centro para la Investigación delCáncer Prostático.
"La falta de consenso sobre la edad a la cual deberíanabandonarse los controles" fue uno de los factores queimpulsaron a los autores a llevar adelante esta revisión.
Los varones de 70 años o más presentaban un estadio másavanzado de la enfermedad a partir de biopsias y por lavelocidad del antígeno prostático específico (PSA).
La mortalidad específica por cáncer prostático fue tambiénpeor en el grupo de hombres mayores de 70 que en los mejores de50 y de 60.
No obstante, medido en años posteriores al tratamientoprimario, el tiempo promedio hasta la muerte fue comparable,más allá de la edad del paciente.
"Cuando se decide si es preciso controlar preventivamente alos pacientes, la edad cronológica no debería ser un factordecisivo aislado", dijo Brassell.
El autor agregó que el estado de salud general, lalongevidad y la posible agresividad de la enfermedad deberíantenerse en cuenta, para luego definir el tratamientoapropiado.
