El comisario europeo de Cooperación y Ayuda al Desarrollo, Louis Michel, condenó hoy la manera en que se ha llevado a cabo la segunda vuelta de las elecciones en Zimbabue e hizo un llamamiento a los líderes africanos para que colaboren en la resolución política de la crisis.
"Esperamos un fuerte liderazgo por parte de la Unión Africana y de la Comunidad para el Desarrollo de África Meridional (SADC) para garantizar una resolución política negociada de la crisis e impulsar un marco de transición para Zimbabue que evite que el país se precipite aún más en el abismo", dijo Michel en un comunicado.
El comisario subrayó que "cualquier mediación o negociación se debe basar en los resultados de la primera vuelta de las elecciones, en la que la población pudo expresar su voluntad".
Michel reiteró que la CE "condena con la mayor rotundidad la organización de las elecciones", celebradas a pesar de los repetidos llamamientos de las autoridades africanas e internacionales para su aplazamiento.
"Consideramos que el uso sistemático de la violencia política e intimidación promovidas por el Estado, que ha conducido a la retirada del líder del Movimiento para el Cambio Democrático (MDC), Morgan Tsvangirai, ha destruido totalmente la credibilidad del proceso", añadió.
El comisario enfatizó que "los resultados de esta farsa electoral no pueden ser ni serán reconocidos como legítimos".
