La asamblea semestral del Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI) y el Banco Mundial (BM) se inaugurará hoy con la reunión del Comité Monetario y Financiero Internacional (IMFC, por su sigla en inglés), el principal órgano ejecutivo del FMI.
El Comité, de nivel ministerial, analizará la situación de la economía mundial y las aportaciones de los países al FMI para potenciar su papel de soporte de naciones con problemas de pagos por la crisis.
La reunión tiene lugar en un momento en que se ha constatado el gran derrumbe de la actividad económica a nivel global en los últimos seis meses, pero cuando también empiezan a aparecer atisbos de luz.
En su encuentro ministerial de ayer, el G-7 dijo que el ritmo de la caída se está ralentizando y que "están emergiendo señales de estabilización", aunque al mismo tiempo remarcó que las perspectivas económicas son "débiles" y que persisten riesgos "a la baja".
La reunión del Comité del FMI servirá para coordinar las medidas que los gobiernos están adoptando para responder a la crisis, tanto en el terreno del estímulo fiscal, como en el de los planes para restablecer la salud al sistema financiero.
El Fondo ha insistido en los últimos días en que no habrá recuperación sostenible hasta que Estados Unidos y Europa no limpien los balances de sus bancos.
Aproximadamente a las 19.30 GMT el presidente del IMFC, Youssef Boutros-Ghali, y el director gerente del FMI, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, darán una rueda de prensa para resumir las conclusiones a las que llegue el Comité, que también emitirá un comunicado.
El domingo tendrá lugar la reunión del Comité de Desarrollo del FMI y el Banco Mundial, que pondrá fin a la asamblea.
