La comisaria europea de Agricultura, Mariann Fischer Boel, aboga por acelerar la aprobación de organismos genéticamente modificados (OGM) en la Unión Europea (UE) con el fin de frenar el alza de los precios de los alimentos.
"Nuestra aprobación demasiado lenta de los OGM pesa en los precios alimentarios", declaró la comisaria en una entrevista publicada hoy por el diario "La Croix".
Explicó que hay que reforzar los efectivos de la Agencia europea de seguridad alimentaria para que ese organismo "acelere su proceso de aprobación de OGM".
Esto "sin poner en entredicho la calidad de su trabajo", matizó la responsable de Agricultura en la Comisión Europea.
"También debemos debatir sobre nuestra tolerancia cero en la importación de OGM no aprobados", recalcó.
Argumentó que ese rechazo conduce a devolver un cargamento completo de soja o de maíz de América del Sur para la alimentación animal cuando hay sólo un pequeño rastro de OGM, lo que encarece los precios para los ganaderos europeos.
