El Parque Victoria de Hong Kong volverá a ser hoy el escenario de un alumbrado de velas para recordar a los estudiantes víctimas de la represión de las protestas de Tiananmen, en Pekín, en 1989.
Sin embargo, el reciente terremoto en Sichuan, en el suroeste de China, la bonanza económica de Hong Kong y las lluvias amenazan con reducir la participación en esta cita anual a favor de la democracia.
"Sí es posible que la participación se reduzca esta noche debido al terremoto de Sichuan y la positiva respuesta que el gobierno chino ha dado al mismo, pero los hongkoneses saben diferenciar entre lo que ocurrió en Tiananmen y este reciente suceso", explicó a Efe una portavoz de Amnistía Internacional en Hong Kong, organización que participará en la vigilia.
Este año, el noveno aniversario de la represión de las protestas estudiantiles en la plaza de Tiananmen, la Alianza de Hong Kong en Apoyo a los Movimientos Democráticos en China, organizadora de la vigilia, ha propuesto como eslogan "Un mundo, derechos humanos universales, un sueño y rectificación del veredicto del 4 de junio".
La Alianza de Hong Kong, que el domingo organizó una marcha por las calles de la ex colonia británica para mantener la denuncia por la represión de 1989, ya fue testigo de un descenso de la participación ciudadana, que no superó el millar de personas.
Según un estudio de la Universidad de Hong Kong, dado a conocer hoy por el diario local "South China Morning Post", este año, por primera vez en cinco años, menos de la mitad de los hongkoneses entrevistados apoyó la idea de que Pekín debería modificar su posición frente a la represión de la Plaza de Tiananmen de 1989.
Al mismo tiempo, nunca antes la percepción general de los 1.007 entrevistados (en el estudio anual que realiza la universidad desde 1993) ha sido tan optimista respecto a las condiciones de derechos humanos en China.
