Los críticos de arte de los principales diarios británicos se muestran hoy inmisericordes con la última obra de Damien Hirst, que se exhibe en la colección Wallace junto a cuadros de los grandes maestros.
La crítica de The Times, Rachel Campbell-Johnson, no duda en calificar de "espantosas" las pinturas expuestas bajo el título de "No Love Lost, Blue Paintings" y se pregunta qué hacen en un museo al lado de obras de Rembrandt, Tiziano, Poussin o Fragonard.
La respuesta, señala, es muy simple: se llama Damien Hirst, y es un nombre que saben apreciar todos los comisarios de exposiciones porque tiene "ese toque comercial" que puede venirle muy bien a cualquier museo con dificultades económicas.
Además, el riquísimo Hirst ha costeado totalmente su exposición y la necesaria reforma de las salas - por un total de 266.000 euros- para que la entrada fuera gratuita.
Vistos desde lejos, los veinticinco cuadros, que Hirst se ufana de haber pintado solo, "no parecen mal", pero cuando el espectador se acerca, producen una impresión como de "dormitorio de un adolescente", escribe Campbell-Johnson.
Para su colega del "Daily Telegraph", Sarah Crompton, la simple confrontación con Francis Bacon y con otros Viejos Maestros que cuelgan en la colección Wallace demuestra lo "endebles y monocordes" que son esos cuadros.
Para el crítico de "The Independent", Tom Lubbock, "si no fuese por su fama, los cuadros de Hirst no se exhibirían en la Wallace" porque es un artista que "sencillamente no sabe pintar" e incluso "comentarlos es fingir que pueden tomarse en serio".
Hirst ha recurrido a sus temas favoritos, como las calaveras o las mariposas, y les ha dado un cierto toque de angustia existencial inspirado, incluso desde el punto de vista formal, por un artista al que admira, Francis Bacon.
El crítico de The Guardian, Adrian Searle, que señala junto a la influencia directa de Bacon, las de Jasper John, Alberto Giacometti y Ross Bleckner, escribe que "en el peor de los casos, las pinturas de Hirst parecen la obra de un adolescente aficionado".
