El argentino Juan Martín del Potro, quinto favorito, se impuso al suizo Stanislas Wawrinka, por 4-6, 6-4 y 6-4, en dos horas y 58 minutos, y se colocó en los cuartos de final del Masters 1000 de Madrid.
Tras ganar su tercer partido en Madrid, del Potro se enfrentará con el británico Andy Murray, cuarto favorito, que derrotó al español Tommy Robredo, decimosexto, por 7-5 y 6-1.
Del Potro sacó adelante un partido complicado ante Wawrinka, un jugador con el que tenía un déficit de 2-1 hasta hoy, pero al que parece haberle tomado la medida, pues hace dos semanas también le derrotó en los octavos de final del Masters 1000 de Roma por 6-2, 6-7 y 6-3 en un partido muy similar al de hoy.
Acomodarse al viento fue un factor decisivo en la jornada de hoy, y el argentino se acopló mucho mejor que el suizo, sobre todo en el tercer set. El partido se disputó en la pista Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, una de las tres con posibilidad de cubrirse del complejo de la Caja Mágica.
Tras deshacerse de Wawrinka, "Delpo" afronta ahora uno de sus desafíos más importantes. Nunca en tres enfrentamientos ha logrado ganar a Murray, situado en el tercer puesto del mundo desde este lunes.
El británico se impuso el pasado año en dos ocasiones, en Roma y en el Abierto de Estados Unidos, y esta temporada en Miami. Todos sus partidos han sido muy disputados, pero siempre ha prevalecido la pegada final de Murray, quien hoy advirtió que Del Potro es un jugador más peligroso.
"Es el quinto del mundo, y ha mejorado sobre tierra", dijo el escocés, "pero creo que con la altitud de Madrid no sacará tanta ventaja con su juego".
