Un nuevo estudio en Españaconfirmó los beneficios de la dieta mediterránea para elcorazón.
Tras estudiar a más de 40.000 adultos españoles durante 10años, los autores hallaron que la dieta reducíasignificativamente el riesgo de sufrir un primer infarto u otracardiopatía.
La dieta mediterránea difiere entre las regiones, pero, engeneral, suele incluir aceite de oliva, frutas, verduras,legumbres, cereales integrales, nueces y semillas. Tambiénprevalece el pescado por sobre otras carnes y un bajo consumode carne roja.
El alcohol, en especial el vino tinto, y los lácteos seconsumen con moderación.
Las evidencias de los efectos favorables de la dieta parael corazón se acumularon durante años, explicó en AmericanJournal of Epidemiology el equipo de Genevieve Buckland, delInstituto Catalán de Oncología, en Barcelona.
De todos modos, algunas debilidades de los estudiosatentaban contra la fortaleza de las conclusiones.
Para investigarlo, el equipo usó datos reunidos entre 1992y el 2004 de 41.078 hombres y mujeres saludables de cincohospitales en España que participaron en el estudio EPIC(European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition),realizado en 10 países.
Los participantes, de 49 años en promedio al inicio delestudio, informaron qué y cuánto comían. El equipo les tomóvarias medidas corporales, indagó sobre hábitos (tabaquismo yactividad física) y revisó sus historias clínicas.
Cada uno recibió un puntaje en una escala de 18 puntos,según cuán cercana era su dieta a la mediterránea. A mayorpuntaje, mayor similitud.
En 10,4 años, 609 participantes tuvieron un infarto oangina inestable con necesidad de intervención. De este total,nueve murieron.
Cuando el equipo comparó esos problemas cardíacos con lospuntos y consideró los factores confusos, halló que cuanto másalto era el puntaje y, por ende, la similitud con la dietamediterránea, menor era el riesgo de desarrollar una enfermedadcardíaca.
De hecho, un puntaje alto estuvo asociado con un 40 porciento menos riesgo de tener un primer evento cardíaco.
Las cardiopatías son la principal causa de muerte en elmundo, provocando el 30 por ciento de todas las muertes, esdecir, 17 millones de decesos por año. Casi la mitad seatribuyen a enfermedades cardíacas.
