Al menos diez soldados paquistaníes han muerto y otros siete han resultado heridos en un ataque insurgente contra un convoy del Ejército en una conflictiva región tribal paquistaní fronteriza con Afganistán, informó hoy a Efe una fuente militar.
El convoy fue atacado ayer por un grupo de hombres armados fieles al líder talibán Hafiz Gul Bahadur, que controla varias áreas de la demarcación de Waziristán del Norte, explicó el portavoz del Ejército Basir Haider.
De acuerdo con esta versión, las fuerzas de seguridad paquistaníes respondieron al ataque horas después con varios bombardeos aéreos contra refugios de los integristas en los que diez supuestos insurgentes perdieron la vida.
Las autoridades paquistaníes ordenaron al Ejército hace más de dos semanas lanzar una gran operación en la región tribal vecina de Waziristán del Sur.
La ofensiva, que tiene como objetivo al líder de los talibanes en Pakistán, Baitulá Mehsud, y su red insurgente se halla actualmente en "fase preparatoria", según reiteró hoy Haider.
Mehsud, Bahadur y otro destacado líder talibán de la zona, el mulá Nazir, reafirmaron a principios de año su compromiso de seguir luchando contra las fuerzas extranjeras en Afganistán.
El Ejército paquistaní, que en el pasado había alcanzado acuerdos de paz con todos ellos, ha declarado que el objetivo de su operación en Waziristán es eliminar a Mehsud y a grupo, presunto responsable de la mayoría de atentados en el país.
