El veterano actor Donald Sutherland será uno de los protagonistas de la adaptación televisiva de la obra "Los pilares de la tierra", de Ken Follet, que se estrenará en 2010, informó la edición digital de The Hollywood Reporter.
La exitosa novela medieval, cuyo argumento transcurre en el siglo XII en el marco de la construcción de una catedral en Inglaterra, será convertida en una miniserie de televisión de ocho horas bajo la dirección de Sergio Mimica-Gezzan ("Heroes" y "Saving Grace").
Mimica-Gezzan fue el primer asistente de director de "Saving Private Ryan" (1998) y "Schindler's List" (1993), del cineasta Steven Spielberg.
Sutherland ("Pride & Prejudice", 2005) interpretará al noble Earl Bartholomew, padre de la joven Aliena (Hayley Atwell, de "Brideshead Revisited", 2008), y estará acompañado de actores como Rufus Sewell ("Tristan + Isolde", 2006) en el papel de Tom Builder e Ian McShane ("Scoop", 2006) como el obispo Waleran.
El programa por capítulos comenzará a producirse el 22 de junio en Hungría y Austria y tiene previsto estrenarse durante la segunda mitad del año que viene, si bien aún no tiene distribución cerrada para EEUU y Reino Unido.
La serie contará en la producción ejecutiva con Ridley y Tony Scott y fue adaptada por John Pielmeier, quien también trabajó en el guión de "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" (2008) y "Hitler: The Rise of Evil" (2003).
"Los pilares de la tierra" tiene ya asegurada su emisión en Alemania, Canadá, Austria, Hungría y España, a través de Sogecable.
La novela fue publicada hace dos décadas y ha sido traducida a 30 idiomas.
En 2007, Ken Follet publicó la esperada secuela de la historia, "World Without End".
