El índice de desempleo en Estados Unidos subió cinco décimas en mayo y se situó en el 9,4% de la fuerza laboral, según ha informado el Departamento de Trabajo estadounidense.
A pesar de que este índice de desempleo es el mayor desde agosto de 1983, el mes pasado la economía tuvo una pérdida neta de unos 345.000 puestos de trabajo , mucho menos que los 500.000 calculados por los analistas.
La economía estadounidense ha tenido una pérdida neta promedio de 643.000 puestos de trabajo durante los seis meses previos, pero la disminución de empleo en mayo fue la menor desde septiembre.
Durante el mes de mayo otras 787.000 personas se sumaron a las filas de los desempleados que sumaron 14,5 millones, según el informe del gobierno.
El índice de desempleo entre los hispanos en EEUU subió del 11,3% al 12,7 por ciento en mayo, y entre los negros bajó del 15% al 14,9% en el mismo período.
El informe muestra, asimismo, que continúa la disparidad en el impacto del desempleo entre hombres y mujeres. El índice de desempleo entre los hombres subió del 10 por ciento en abril al 10,5% en mayo; entre las mujeres subió del 7,8 al 8% en el mismo período.
