Los ministros de Finanzas de los países de la moneda única aplazaron hoy la elección del nuevo vicepresidente del Banco Central Europeo en sustitución del griego Lucas Papademos, cuyo mandato finaliza el 31 de mayo de 2010.
El nombramiento del futuro número dos de la institución, por debajo del presidente Jean-Claude Trichet, no figura en la agenda oficial del Ecofin hasta el próximo mes, pero se esperaba que el Eurogrupo avanzara en las discusiones durante la reunión de hoy.
Sin embargo, esta tarde se ha limitado a debatir "sobre cuestiones formales y de procedimiento", según informó a Efe el portavoz del presidente del Eurogrupo, Jean-Claude Juncker.
Tampoco han señalado a un favorito, según el portavoz luxemburgués.
La terna de candidatos para la vicepresidencia está formada por Yves Mersch, gobernador del Banco Central de Luxemburgo; Vitor Constancio, responsable del regulador de Portugal; y Peter Praet, director ejecutivo de la entidad belga, que defendieron su candidatura ante el Parlamento Europeo, la semana pasada.
El actual Comité Ejecutivo del BCE, del que forma parte Papademos, está integrado por seis miembros, entre ellos el español José Manuel González-Páramo, cuyo mandato finaliza el 31 de mayo de 2012.
El proceso de elección del sustituto de Papademos, cuyo mandato termina en mayo, prevé su confirmación por los jefes de Estado o de Gobierno, así como consultas con el propio BCE y el Parlamento Europeo (PE).
