En Europa y el Asia occidental hubo tres grupos de neandertales hace entre 30.000 y 100.000 años, según confirma un estudio realizado por antropólogos franceses que publica hoy en internet la revista PLoS ONE.
De acuerdo a Virginie Fabre, Silvana Condemi y Anna Degioanni, antropólogas del Laboratorio CNRS de Antropología de la Universidad de Marsellas, es posible que haya existido un cuarto grupo de neandertales en el Asia occidental.
Las investigadoras francesas llegaron a esa conclusión a través del análisis de la estructura del ADN mitocondrial de restos de 12 neandertales.
Para ello utilizaron una nueva metodología basada en modelos bioinformáticos y a partir de datos genéticos, demográficos y paleoantropológicos.
Según las autoras del estudio, el tamaño de la población de neandertales que pobló Europa se modificó de manera permanente y esos subgrupos realizaron constantes migraciones.
La variación demográfica de los neandertales posiblemente fue un resultado indirecto de las condiciones climáticas en su territorio durante el Pleistoceno, según las antropólogas.
Estudios paleoantropológicos realizados, que se basaron en la evidencia morfológica de los esqueletos de neandertales, habían sugerido ya la existencia de tres grupos; uno en Europa occidental, otro en el sur de Europa y otro en la región del Levante.
Las investigadoras indicaron que esperan que su nueva metodología pueda aplicarse a la diversidad cultural y la disponibilidad de recursos naturales en los lugares donde vivieron.
Esto podría proporcionar un nuevo conocimiento sobre la historia y extinción de los neandertales, indicaron.
