Unas 900 personas podrían haber salvado la vida en 2008 si se hubieran respetado los límites de alcohol al volante, lo que supone que entre el 30 y el 50 por ciento de los accidentes mortales registrados en las carreteras españolas estuvieron relacionados con el consumo de alcohol.
Son datos de un informe publicado en el último número de la revista "Tráfico y Seguridad Vial" editada por la Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), que añade que dos de cada tres delitos cometidos contra la seguridad vial están relacionados con el consumo de alcohol.
Actualmente hay en prisión casi medio millar de personas por delitos de tráfico, el 87 por ciento por conducción temeraria con resultado de muerte o lesiones graves.
En muchos de estos casos, los responsables conducían bajo los efectos del alcohol.
Sólo el año pasado, 35.166 personas fueron condenadas por ponerse al volante con una tasa de alcohol superior a los 1,2 gramos por litro, aunque fueron muchos más los conductores "pillados" en los controles de alcoholemia con una tasa inferior y que acabaron con una simple multa.
En 2008, los positivos por alcohol crecieron un 23 por ciento con respecto a 2007, y alcanzaron las 109.785 sanciones.
No obstante, sólo el 2,5 por ciento de los infractores son reincidentes, es decir aquellos a los que se ha sancionado por conducir bebidos en al menos tres ocasiones en el último año.
Pese a ello, los bebedores "incorregibles" fueron responsables de uno de cada cuatro accidentes graves en las carreteras españolas el año pasado.
La mayoría de los conductores españoles -un 75 por ciento de los hombres y la mitad de las mujeres- son bebedores habituales, aunque apenas llegan al 22 por ciento los que consumen alcohol en exceso.
Por sexos, el 89 por ciento de las casi 110.000 sanciones por consumo de alcohol impuestas el año pasado tuvieron como destinatario a un varón, a pesar de que las mujeres suponen el 40 por ciento del total de conductores.
La mitad de los conductores sancionados por alcoholemia tiene una edad comprendida entre los 20 y los 40 años.
