Los dos F-18 que cayeron esta tarde en el océano Atlántico, al sur de Gran Canaria, chocaron en pleno vuelo mientras hacían unos ejercicios en una zona de prácticas aéreas, informaron a Efe fuentes de la Delegación del Gobierno en Canarias.
Sus dos pilotos, que saltaron de los aparatos antes de que se estrellaran en el océano, han sido ya evacuados por el SAR a la base aérea grancanaria y desde allí se ha procedido a su traslado a un hospital de la isla para someterles a una revisión, informaron a Efe fuentes del Servicio Aéreo de Rescate (SAR).
El accidente tuvo lugar a primera hora de la tarde a 60 millas al sureste de Gran Canaria, entre Fuerteventura y África.
A las 13.45 horas GMT (14.45 hora insular), el SAR recibió el aviso de los pilotos y envió al lugar un helicóptero Superpuma, cuya tripulación localizó a los pilotos a las 15:25 horas (local), y procedió a su rescate.
Tras su paso por la base de Gando, los dos pilotos han sido trasladados al Hospital Insular de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Aunque en principio los dos pilotos se encuentran en buen estado, no se descarta que sufran secuelas del impacto en el mar y de la propia eyección de sus puestos de cabina.
El Servicio Aéreo de Rescate ha movilizado una patrullera de la Armada y una embarcación de Salvamento Marítimo para intentar recuperar los restos de los aviones F-18, que operaban bajo los indicativos de "halcón".
