El cooperante Vicente Ferrer falleció este jueves a las 23.15 gmt (1.15 del viernes hora española) en la localidad india de Anantapur, tras agravarse su estado de salud por los problemas respiratorios que padecía desde hace tiempo.
La portavoz de la fundación Vicente Ferrer, Blanca Romaña, dijo a EFE desde Anantapur que el ex jesuita, de 89 años, estaba en el momento de su muerte acompañado por su mujer e hijos y por miembros de su fundación.
"Ha fallecido rodeado de su familia y sereno, como era su deseo, añadió la portavoz de la fundación humanitaria.
Vicente Ferrer, que sufrió una embolia el pasado mes de marzo, se encontraba en estado crítico tras padecer dificultades respiratorias, según informó ayer su hijo, Moncho Ferrer a EFE.
"Ayer por la noche empezó con problemas respiratorios. Se encuentra en estado crítico, pero no está sufriendo. No está muy consciente", dijo el hijo del filántropo catalán.
La organización de Vicente Ferrer lleva a cabo su labor humanitaria en Andhra y presta ayuda a más de 2,5 millones de personas en ese estado del sur de la India.
Ferrer llegó como misionero jesuita en 1952 a la India, de donde fue expulsado en 1968 por las suspicacias que despertó su labor entre las autoridades indias.
Pero cuando regresó un año después, la entonces primera ministra Indira Gandhi ordenó que le concedieran el visado, y continuó con su tarea filantrópica en el depauperado estado de Andhra.
Abandonó la Compañía de Jesús y continuó trabajando hasta el final de sus días por la mejora de las condiciones de vida de los más pobres.
