El español Fernando Verdasco, noveno favorito y semifinalista el pasado año, pasó a la segunda ronda del abierto de Australia al vencer hoy al australiano Carsten Ball, 129 del mundo e invitado especial, por 6-7 (4), 7-6 (1), 7-5 y 6-2.
Ganador el domingo de la exhibición de Kooyont al derrotar en la final al francés Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Verdasco necesitó tres horas y cinco minutos para doblegar al gigante australiano, que conectó 13 saques directos y presentó una dura batalla, especialmente por la velocidad de su saque con el que alcanzó 219 kilómetros por hora.
Las buenas maneras de Ball, un jugador de excelente volea, se fueron diluyendo durante el partido. El australiano, tras ganar el primer set, dispuso de 5-4 y saque en el segundo pero lo cedió y Fernando logró nivelar la contienda en el segundo desempate.
Ya con ventaja de dos sets a uno, Verdasco estuvo más tranquilo y se fue en el marcador, mientras que Ball notó su falta de experiencia y entregó el encuentro con su sexta doble falta.
El jugador español se enfrentará ahora contra el ucraniano Ivan Sergeyev, procedente de la fase previa, que venció al israelí Dudi Sela, por 6-3, 7-6 (3), 4-6 y 7-6 (8).
