El frío y la nieve han vuelto a paralizar el Reino Unido con cierres de aeropuertos internacionales como el de Heathrow y fuertes perturbaciones en ferrocarriles y carreteras.
La compañía British Airways anunció hoy la cancelación de todos los vuelos de salida de Heathrow entre las 10.00 y las 17.00 GMT.
"Se esperan graves perturbaciones en todos los aeropuertos londinenses", señaló un portavoz de la aerolínea, que pidió a los viajeros que no se dirijan Heathrow entre las horas señaladas a menos que les han tengan algún otro vuelo confirmado.
La compañía de vuelos baratos Easyjet ha cancelado por su parte todos los vuelos de llegada y salida de Gatwick por lo menos hasta las diez de la mañana y espera fuertes retrasos a lo largo del día.
Un portavoz de ese aeropuerto, donde se registraron la pasada noche temperaturas de 11 grados bajo cero, dijo que se han visto afectados todos los vuelos a Amsterdam, Ginebra, Múnich y Copenhague.
Otros aeropuertos cerrados provisionalmente son los de Bristol y el internacional de Belfast aunque se esperan también allí fuertes retrasos.
La nieve y las bajísimas temperaturas han causado situaciones caóticas en carreteras y en los ferrocarriles, que han cancelado también numerosos servicios.
Cientos de automovilistas pasaron buena parte de la noche encerrados en sus vehículos en la carretera M6 en la zona del gran Manchester como consecuencia del accidente de un camión, que se quedó cruzado.
La Policía ha advertido a los ciudadanos que no viajen a ninguna parte a menos que sea absolutamente necesario.
El servicio meteorológico prevé fuertes nevadas en el norte de Escocia, Irlanda del Norte, Gales y partes de Inglaterra.
El viernes cerraron por lo menos 800 escuelas en Gales, 500 en Escocia y 700 en Irlanda del Norte.
Los meteorólogos anuncian que las bajas temperaturas podrían durar todavía un mes.
Mientras tanto el comercio teme que las condiciones árticas disuadan a muchos ciudadanos de salir a comprar este fin de semana prenavideño, que es tradicionalmente el de mayores ventas del año.
