Un gran incendio esta madrugada en una fábrica de parafina a las afueras de la ciudad portuaria alemana de Kiel, cerca de la frontera danesa en el Báltico, ha obligado a evacuar cientos de personas y al despliegue masivo de bomberos para apagar las llamas.
Como consecuencia del fuego, que se inició sobre la medianoche, fueron explotando e incendiándose sucesivamente varios grandes depósitos de parafina situados al borde del canal que une los mares del Norte y Báltico.
Unas 500 personas en un radio de un kilómetro de la fábrica debieron ser evacuadas, mientras más de 300 bomberos, apoyados desde el agua por varias naves especializadas en sofocar incendios, trabajaron hasta apagar las llamas sobre las 03.30 horas locales (01.00 GMT).
Un portavoz de los bomberos explicó hoy que el siniestro se inició al parecer en una papelera situada junto a un depósito de parafina y que al incendiarse y explotar este prendieron fuego sucesivamente otros grandes tanques anejos.
Las llamas alcanzaron hasta 15 metros de altura y pudieron verse desde la cercana ciudad de Kiel, mientras una importante cantidad de parafina líquida se derramó ardiendo en las aguas del canal que une los dos mares.
Ante el temor de que el fuego, que causó dos heridos leves afectados por el humo, alcanzase los depósitos de combustible para calefacción de las viviendas cercanas se ordenó inmediatamente la evacuación de la zona.
El canal que une el mar del Norte y el Báltico, el más transitado del mundo, fue cerrado hasta que se consiguió sofocar el incendio, cuyas causas se desconocen y de cuya investigación se encarga la policía.
