El secretario general de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA), José Miguel Insulza, y la canciller hondureña, Patricia Rodas, clausuraron hoy la XXXIX Asamblea General tras aprobar la Declaración contra la violencia y anunciar que la cita del próximo año será en Washington.
Al cierre de la reunión, que se inició el martes, los delegados de los 34 países de la OEA aprobaron por unanimidad la Declaración de San Pedro Sula, que recoge el compromiso de los cancilleres de promover una cultura de paz y de no violencia en el continente.
Insulza y Rodas clausuraron la XXXIX Asamblea General a altas horas de la madrugada con casi ocho horas de retraso, debido a problemas de procedimiento y a que el levantamiento de la suspensión a Cuba absorbió casi toda la jornada.
La Asamblea General estuvo marcada desde el principio en su práctica totalidad por el asunto de Cuba, pese a que el tema central era la no violencia.
La revocación de la resolución que suspendió a La Habana del Sistema Interamericano en 1962 supone un paso "histórico" por parte de la OEA, que abre así la puerta al regreso de Cuba casi medio siglo después de su exclusión por sus vínculos con el bloque chino-soviético.
Rodas señaló que la aprobación, por consenso de la resolución que levanta la exclusión de Cuba del Sistema Interamericano, "marcó un hito en la historia del continente".
"Hemos dado el primer paso al desagravio y el primer paso a la recuperación de nuestra dignidad", afirmó la canciller hondureña.
"Hemos respondido a una vieja y dolorosa deuda" del continente, agregó.
La XXXX Asablea General de la OEA se celebrará en junio de 2010 en Washington, coincidiendo con el centésimo aniversario de la sede del organismo interamericano.
Insulza no intervino pero entregó a Rodas las banderas de los países miembros de la OEA y el martillo del organismo.
