Isabel II de Inglaterra se quedó sin poder ocupar el palco real porque había sido alquilado a otras personas por los organizadores de la carrera de caballos de Newbury, en el condado de Berkshire.
La reina de Inglaterra había disfrutado el día anterior en el palco para ver correr a su caballo "Four Winds", pero al regresar al día siguiente inesperadamente al hipódromo se encontró con que su palco estaba ya ocupado.
Como consecuencia, señala hoy el diario "The Daily Telegrah", Isabel II se vio materialmente "expulsada de su propio palco y tuvo que sufrir la ignominia de pasar el día en el de los invitados", al que además sólo se puede subir en un ascensor de uso público.
El palco real lo había alquilado John Finch, un agente de seguros que celebraba su 60 cumpleaños con su esposa, Sheila, que había pagado 10.000 libras (más de 11.000 euros) para ver correr a su caballo.
"Lo alquilé en julio del año pasado, así que no quería perderme la ocasión. Soy un socio de Newbury y nunca había estado en el palco real. Fue una gran jornada", explicó Finch.
Cuando se le preguntó a su esposa por el contratiempo que la ocupación del palco había supuesto para la Reina, aquélla respondió: "No le presté demasiada atención porque estar allí nos había costado mucho dinero".
"No me importaría que nos lo alquilaran al precio que le cobran a ella. Pasamos un día maravilloso, y todo el mundo en Newbury nos hizo sentirnos orgullosos", agregó.
Un portavoz de Isabel II no quiso comentar la noticia al explicar que la Reina había visitado el hipódromo "a título privado".
