La compañía japonesa Nipro Corpretiró 2 millones de agujas distribuidas en Estados Unidos paraextraer sangre e inyectar medicinas, entre otros fines, dijeronel martes funcionarios de salud estadounidenses.
Las agujas son usadas para llegar a dispositivosimplantados debajo de la piel en pacientes crónicamenteenfermos y obtener un acceso repetido a las venas.
La Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos de EstadosUnidos (FDA) dijo que las inspecciones de las instalaciones deNipro, efectuadas en octubre del 2009 en Japón, encontraron unproblema en las agujas que hacía que las piezas de la capa desilicona del dispositivo se desplazaran.
Los reguladores encontraron que entre el 60 y el 72 porciento de las agujas testeadas tuvieron esta falla, dijo laFDA.
Si bien no se han reportado daños a la salud, funcionariosde la agencia dijeron a periodistas en una llamada enconferencia que les preocupaba que una pieza de siliconapudiera ingresar en el flujo sanguíneo de los pacientes.
Las agujas pertenecen al tipo Huber y fueron distribuidaspor la compañía privada Exel International.
La subsidiaria de Nipro, Nipro Medical Corp, derivó laspreguntas a Exel. Ningún funcionario de esta compañía pudo sercontactado para hacer declaraciones.
