El escritor chileno Jorge Edwards, que fue diplomático, trabajó con el poeta Pablo Neruda cuando ejerció como embajador, y fue declarado "persona non grata" por el régimen castrista, dijo hoy en Sevilla que todavía "falta bastante para que yo pueda ser persona grata en Cuba".
Con el título de "Persona non grata" precisamente tituló Edwards su libro de memorias sobre su experiencia cubana, que no duró más de tres meses y medio pero la cual, admitió hoy a preguntas de los periodistas, le marcó de por vida porque desde entonces se siente "cubanizado" con lo que fue "una experiencia esencial" en su vida.
Sobre su interés por volver a la isla, el escritor matizó con cierta ironía que "con el retiro del comandante a lo mejor podría volver; pero tengo miedo a volver porque es demasiado complicado que los que eran enemigos declarados míos sean ahora amigos".
Preguntado por el futuro de Cuba con la retirada de Fidel Castro a un segundo plano, Edwards lamentó no poder hacer de adivino aunque volvió a la ironía para afirmar: "a lo mejor termino yendo de visita".
El escritor chileno señaló que Cuba, en cualquier caso, no ocupa más de setenta páginas en su última novela, "La casa de Dostoievsky", con la que ha obtenido el Premio Iberoamericano de Narrativa Planeta-Casamérica de este año y que presentó hoy en Sevilla.
Los otros escenarios de esta obra, que narra la peripecia de un joven poeta en la misma época de la juventud de Edwards -"yo quise ser poeta de joven", aseguró el escritor-, son un Santiago de Chile "que ya no existe" y París.
