Los judíos israelíes que sobrevivieron a la Segunda Guerra Mundial en Europa tienen un riesgo mucho mayor de desarrollar cáncer que otros, posiblemente por las penurias sufridas durante el Holocausto, dijeron el lunes unos investigadores.
Los expertos dijeron que el estudio, publicado en el Journal of the National Cancer Institute, sugiere que la tensión u otros factores, como la extrema privación, puede jugar un papel importante en la aparición del cáncer.
Los investigadores, dirigidos por el doctor Lital Keinan-Boker en la Universidad de Haifa en Israel, compararon los índices de esta enfermedad en dos grupos de judíos israelíes nacidos en Europa: uno de 258.048 personas que dejaron Europa después de la guerra y otro de 57.496 que emigraron antes o durante el conflicto.
Ambos grupos tuvieron más incidencia de cáncer que otros judíos y grupos no judíos en Israel.
Sin embargo, los investigadores vieron que los judíos que vivieron la Segunda Guerra Mundial en Europa fueron al menos un 17 por ciento más propensos a desarrollar cáncer que quienes se fueron antes o durante la guerra.
Los resultados son importantes, según los investigadores, ya que muchos judíos que sobrevivieron a la guerra en el viejo continente también fueron víctimas del Holocausto, la persecución y asesinato sistemático de unos 6 millones de judíos realizada por el régimen alemán nazi y sus colaboradores.
Los supervivientes sufrieron hambre, tensión mental y estuvieron expuestos al frío y agentes infecciosos.
"Una posible explicación para las diferencias en la incidencia de cáncer observadas entre los diversos grupos étnicos judíos puede ser las diferencias en su exposición específica a los traumas del Holocausto", escribió Keinan-Boker.
"Estas observaciones pueden tener un impacto directo en la salud de los judíos supervivientes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y por lo tanto en el cuidado necesario de sus médicos en Israel y otros lugares", señalaron.
