El presidente de Maldivas y sus ministros celebraron el sábado una reunión de gobierno bajo el agua, en un llamamiento simbólico de auxilio sobre los crecientes niveles del mar que amenazan la existencia del archipiélago tropical.
Vestidos con trajes de buzo negros y mascarillas, el presidente Mohamed Nasheed, 11 ministros, el vicepresidente y el secretario de gabinete se sumergieron en las cristalinas aguas de una laguna, en un país que atrae a miles de turistas a centros turísticos de lujo por 1.000 dólares la noche.
Nasheed gesticuló con las manos para dar inicio a la reunión de 30 minutos de duración, según mostró la televisión estatal.
"Estamos intentando enviar nuestro mensaje para permitir que el mundo sepa lo que está sucediendo y lo que pasará a las Maldivas si no se frena el cambio climático", declaró un empapado Nasheed a periodistas apenas salió del agua.
El archipiélago, cercano a India, conocido por sus lujosos refugios tropicales y playas que conservan su belleza natural, se encuentra entre los más amenazados por el aumento de los mares.
Si las predicciones de la ONU son correctas, gran parte de las Maldivas estarán sumergidas para el año 2100.
El acto de Nasheed y sus ministros se produce de cara a una histórica reunión de Naciones Unidas por el calentamiento global que se celebrará en diciembre.
