Angela Merkel fue elegida el miércoles formalmente canciller para un segundo mandato por los miembros del Parlamento alemán, preparando el camino para que su nueva coalición de centroderecha tome las riendas del poder hoy mismo.
Los conservadores de Merkel lograron suficientes votos en las elecciones del 27 de septiembre para formar gobierno con los Liberales Demócratas (FDP) y poner fin a la difícil "gran coalición" mantenida durante cuatro años con sus rivales Socialdemócratas (SPD).
Merkel, de 55 años, se convirtió en la primera mujer en ser elegida canciller en Alemania en 2005 y es la única líder del país que creció en el Este ex comunista.
En su nueva coalición, ha dicho que su prioridad será garantizar que la mayor economía de Europa salga más fuerte de la crisis financiera. El Gobierno ha prometido miles de millones de euros en rebajas fiscales, aunque no está claro cómo financiará los recortes en un momento de crecientes deudas.
El presidente Horst Köhler tomará juramento a Merkel y a los ministros de su nuevo Gobierno hoy mismo.
