La primera dama estadounidense, Michelle Obama, dio hoy en San Francisco el pistoletazo de salida al programa de voluntariado "Unidos Servimos" ("United We Serve"), lanzado por el presidente Barack Obama para promover el voluntariado en Estados Unidos.
Michelle Obama participó este lunes junto a la esposa del gobernador de California, Maria Shriver, en la remodelación de un parque infantil, ubicado al lado de una escuela en una zona deprimida del sur de San Francisco.
Las mejoras en el parque incluirán la creación de un huerto de vegetales además de un pequeño mercado donde niños y mayores podrán vender los productos de la tierra con el objetivo de recaudar fondos para el colegio.
El programa "Unidos Servimos", anunciado por el presidente Barack Obama la pasada semana, busca animar a los estadounidenses a que trabajen voluntariamente durante este verano en actividades en su comunidad que contribuyan a mejorar la situación económica.
En concreto, la iniciativa se centra en cuatro áreas: energía y medio ambiente, salud, educación y renovación de comunidades.
La Primera Dama y otros 19 miembros de la Administración aprovecharon hoy para dar ejemplo y trabajar como voluntarios en diferentes proyectos, pero los miembros del Gobierno tienen previsto participar en el proyecto en algún momento de este verano.
El secretario de Defensa, Robert Gates, pasará tiempo con veteranos del Gobierno en el Centro Walter Reed del Ejército, mientras que el secretario de Comercio, Gary Locke, leerá a niños del centro para personas sin hogar La Mesita en Mesa, Arizona.
Esta noche, Michelle Obama completará su visita a San Francisco con un discurso en la Conferencia Nacional de Voluntariado y Servicio.
