El Ejército filipino combatió hoy contra los rebeldes islámicos en el sur del archipiélago durante una ofensiva para rescatar a un cooperante italiano de la Cruz Roja Internacional secuestrado hace 99 días por el grupo radical Abu Sayyaf.
Los soldados se enfrentaron en las junglas de la isla de Joló, 980 kilómetros al sur de la capital a unos 50 guerrilleros, que defienden el lugar donde ocultan a Eugenio Vagni, de 62 años y con un delicado estado de salud, dijo a la prensa el general Gaudencio Pangilinan.
Patrulleros de la Armada han bloqueado todos los puertos de la isla para evitar que los insurgentes puedan escapar por mar.
Vagni fue secuestrado a principios de enero junto a otros dos trabajadores de la organización internacional, la filipina Mary Jean Lacaba y el suizo Andreas Notter.
Lacaba fue liberada el 2 de abril, mientras Notter fue rescatado 16 días después.
Inicialmente, los guerrilleros condicionaban la liberación de los tres a la retirada de las tropas gubernamentales de Joló, y llegaron a amenazar con decapitar a los rehenes.
Fundado en 1991 por ex combatientes de la guerra de Afganistán contra la Unión Soviética, Abu Sayyaf está vinculado a la Yemaa Islamiya, el brazo de Al Qaeda en el Sudeste Asiático.
Considerado un grupo terrorista por los gobiernos de Filipinas y Estados Unidos, se le atribuyen los atentados más sangrientos de los últimos años en el archipiélago y múltiples secuestros de nacionales y extranjeros.
