Rafa Nadal, el número dos del mundo, superó el lunes su debut en el Abierto de Australia con una victoria frente al jugador local Peter Luczak en tres sets.
Nadal se impuso a Luczak por 7-6, 6-1 y 6-4 en un partido que tuvo un primer set muy igualado.
Anteriormente, el británico Andy Murray superó los nervios del debut y ciertas dudas sobre su saque y pasó a la segunda ronda tras demoler por 6-1, 6-1 y 6-2 al sudafricano Kevin Anderson.
quinto favorito - se detuvo momentáneamente cuando su servicio fue roto en momentos en que estaba ganando por 3-1 en el tercer set del encuentro disputado en la pista cubierta del Rod Laver Arena.
Pero el escocés, que encarna la esperanza de Reino Unido de poner fin a una sequía de 74 años de títulos en un Grand Slam, se impuso en los cuatro juegos siguientes para sellar su victoria.
Pese a ejercer un control completo desde el principio, Murray confesó haber sentido nervios contra el sudafricano, que nunca ha pasado de la primera ronda en un Grand Slam.
"No le habían roto el servicio en toda la etapa de eliminatorias. Estaba un poco nervioso al comienzo, pero después pude cortarle", dijo Murray.
El próximo rival de Murray saldrá del encuentro entre el francés Marc Gicquel y el italiano Simone Bolelli.
"Ambos son buenos jugadores. Jugué contra Gicquel en el pasado (...) Es un jugador difícil, con mucha experiencia, muy rápido. Bolelli es muy talentoso. Puede pegarle a la pelota con fuerza desde el fondo de la pista. Pero yo jugué bien contra él en las últimas dos ocasiones", declaró el tenista de 22 años.
Otros resultados de la jornada inaugural en el cuadro masculino fueron: Juan Martínez del Potro (Argentina) batió a Michael Russell (EEUU) por 6-4, 6-4 3-6 y 6-2; Andy Roddick (EEUU) se impuso a Thiemo de Bakker (Holanda) por 6-1, 6-4 y 6-4; Fernando González (Chile) derrotó a Olivier Rochus (Bélgica) por 6-3, 6-4, 3-6 y 6-1.
