El planeado regreso del tenista David Nalbandian a un Grand Slam ha quedado aplazado al menos hasta Roland Garros, debido a una lesión que sufrió durante una sesión de entrenamiento.
El argentino esperaba jugar en el Abierto de Australia, que comienza la próxima semana en Melbourne, pero dijo el miércoles a los organizadores que debía retirarse.
Nalbandian sufrió un tirón en un músculo abdominal el lunes mientras se preparaba para el Abierto de Auckland (Nueva Zelanda), donde tenía previsto regresar al circuito profesional.
El ex número tres del mundo ha estado fuera de las canchas por una lesión desde mayo y fue intervenido quirúrgicamente en la cadera en agosto.
Nalbandian ha alcanzado las semifinales de los cuatro torneos de Grand Slam y la final de Wimbledon en 2002. También ganó la Copa de Maestros de la ATP en 2005, pero ha retrocedido al puesto 63 de la lista mundial debido a su larga ausencia.
