La página web del diario The New York Times ha registrado un descenso de entre el 5 y el 15 % en el número de visitas que recibe diariamente desde que el pasado 28 de marzo comenzó a cobrar por acceder a los contenidos de su edición digital.
El análisis, llevado a cabo por la empresa Experian Hitwise, se basa en el estudio del tráfico por Internet, tras comparar el número de lectores de su página web en un periodo de 12 días antes de que el diario neoyorquino levantara su "muro de pago" con otros tantos días posteriores a esa fecha.
La reducción del número de visitas se ha dado con la excepción del sábado 9 de abril, cuando experimentó un aumento del 7%, que el análisis atribuye a la inquietud de los lectores sobre la posibilidad de una paralización del Gobierno de Estados Unidos ante la falta de acuerdo sobre los presupuestos en el Congreso.
El efecto del llamado "muro de pago" fue mayor si se contabiliza el número total de páginas visitadas en esa web, que durante los mismos días estudiados se vio reducido entre en un 11 y un 30%.
El prestigioso rotativo ha puesto en funcionamiento un sistema de pago que ofrece tres opciones de suscripción: por 15 dólares al mes los lectores tienen acceso ilimitado al contenido de la web desde ordenadores tradicionales y teléfonos móviles, por 20 dólares desde computadores convencionales y iPads, y por 35 dólares desde cualquiera de esos dispositivos. No obstante, los lectores pueden leer gratuitamente hasta 20 artículos al mes.
En un intento por mantener a los más de 31 millones de lectores al mes de su web , la compañía no cuenta en su límite de veinte artículos mensuales las visitas desde las redes sociales Twitter y Facebook, mientras que si se llega al diario a través del buscador Google se podrán leer hasta 5 artículos más al mes.
