Nueva Zelanda confirmó hoy tres nuevos contagios por la gripe porcina y elevó a catorce el total de infectados en el país.
El ministro de Sanidad neozelandés, Tony Ryall, explicó que dos miembros de un grupo de estudiantes que volvieron de México, y un turista que viajó a Estados Unidos dieron positivo por la cepa H1N1 del virus, según los medios locales.
Todos se encuentran en cuarentena voluntaria en sus casas y están siendo tratados con el fármaco Tamiflu, de la que disponen de 1,4 millones de dosis, agregó Ryall.
Además, las autoridades sanitarias neozelandesas han enviado a laboratorios de la ciudad australiana de Melbourne muestras de otras 44 personas que estuvieron en esos países hace menos de dos semanas y mostraron síntomas similares a los de la gripe porcina.
El Gobierno de Nueva Zelanda anunció ayer once positivos en otro grupo de estudiantes y profesores que regresaron el sábado al país tras un viaje a México, y todavía se intenta localizar a 18 de los 356 pasajeros que volaron junto a ellos en un avión que partió de Los Ángeles (EEUU).
Varios gobiernos de Asia y Oceanía han declarado la alerta ante la posibilidad de que el virus llegue a sus países.
Los síntomas de la gripe porcina, una variante de la tradicional cepa H1N1 que mutó de los cerdos a los humanos, son fiebre alta, tos, dolor de cabeza intenso, dolores en músculos y articulaciones, irritación de los ojos y flujo nasal.
Según la directora de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, Margaret Chan, el actual brote tiene el potencial de convertirse en una pandemia mundial.
