El presidente de la Organización de Países Exportadores de Petróleo (OPEP), Chakib Jelil, calificó hoy de "anormal" el actual precio del crudo y aseguró que en un contexto adecuado el barril podría caer más de un 35 por ciento.
Jelil argumentó en Yakarta, donde viajó para reunirse con el ministro de Energía indonesio, Purnomo Yusgiantoro, que "si el dólar continúa fortaleciéndose" y "la situación política mejora", en referencia a Irán, los precios del petróleo a largo plazo, podrían situarse "en torno a 78 dólares" el barril.
De esta forma, el presidente de la OPEP expuso la tesis de la mayoría de países pertenecientes al cártel petrolero, que han repetido en distintas ocasiones que la actual alza de los precios no se debe a un problema de oferta.
Además, Jelil añadió que si los precios empiezan a caer, los países de la OPEP no deberían reducir la oferta, lo que favorecería que el precio del crudo siga descendiendo en comparación con los registros obtenidos en los últimos meses.
El presidente de la OPEP consideró, además, que el encarecimiento del petróleo no ha conllevado una reducción de la demanda.
El barril de crudo se cotizaba a última hora de ayer por encima de los 125 dólares en Nueva York, después de que Royal Dutch Shell anunciase un recorte en la producción de sus instalaciones petrolíferas en Nigeria tras un acto de sabotaje.
No obstante, a principios de este mes el barril de crudo llegó a situarse por encima de 147 dólares.
