Cirujanos australianos han salvado la pierna de un feto de 22 semanas en la primera operación quirúrgica realizada en Australia antes de los siete meses de embarazo, informaron hoy fuentes médicas.
El bebé, que sufría una anomalía por la que el tejido que lo rodea cortaba la sangre que debía llegar a sus piernas, fue intervenido dentro del útero de la madre, que se encuentra ingresada en el hospital Monash Medical de Melbourne.
Los padres decidieron que se llevase a cabo la operación después de que los médicos les informasen de que tras el nacimiento de la niña tendrían que amputarle ambas piernas si antes no era intervenida.
Un portavoz del hospital indicó que es la primera vez en Australia que se interviene a un feto antes de que se cumplan 28 semanas de embarazo, cuando las posibilidades de supervivencia del bebé son mayores.
La operación se realizó a través del abdomen de la madre con un telescopio de dos milímetros de grosor con el fin de aplicar el láser necesario para cortar el tejido que impedía el flujo sanguíneo de la pierna izquierda del feto.
