Unos piratas secuestraron este martes otro barco frente a la costa de Somalia, en su último ataque contra la navegación comercial, dijo un grupo marítimo.
El Programa de Asistencia a Navegantes del Este de África aseguró que el MV Irene E.M., que podría ser griego, fue capturado antes del amanecer. No tenía más detalles por el momento. Se cree que es un barco con bandera de San Vincente.
Además, señaló que los 22 tripulantes al bordo del barco se encuentran "ilesos".
El teniente comandante de la OTAN Alexandre Fernandes comentó que el buque de guerra portugués NRP Corte-Realhabía recibido una llamada de auxilio del buque griego.
"Había sólo tres minutos de diferencia entre la alarma y el secuestro", dijo Fernandes, que añadió que era "muy inusual" que los piratas hubieran atacado por la noche.
Este último secuestro se produce días después de que fuerzas especiales estadounidenses mataran a tres piratas en un asalto contra un bote salvavidas donde retenían al capitán de un barco de EEUU secuestrado, que fue liberado.
Precisamente, algunos temen que esta operación pueda incrementar la probabilidad de violencia en alta mar.
Bandas marítimas llevan tiempo atracando y secuestrando barcos y buques en canales vitales del océano Índico y el estratégico golfo de Adén, capturando docenas de barcos y huyendo con millones de dólares en rescates.
La piratería es un negocio lucrativo en la anárquica nación del Cuerno de África, que lleva sin gobierno central desde el derrocamiento del dictador Mohamed Siad Barre en 1991.
