Piratas somalíes liberaron el lunes un buque cisterna de bandera griega que llevaba 2 millones de barriles de petróleo, un día después de que fuera lanzado sobre su cubierta el mayor rescate pagado hasta ahora, dijeron los piratas y un responsable marítimo.
El Maran Centaurus fue capturado el 29 de noviembre con 16 filipinos, nueve griegos, dos ucranianos y un rumano. Un avión lanzó un rescate que estaría entre 5,5 millones y 7 millones de dólares (entre 3,8 y 4,9 millones de euros) al barco el domingo, dijeron responsables.
"Hemos acordado resolver nuestros desacuerdos y liberar el barco. Está libre y navegando", dijo uno de los piratas, Hassan, a Reuters por teléfono. "Toda la tripulación está sana y salva", añadió.
Otro pirata y un responsable marítimo regional confirmaron que el petrolero, secuestrado cerca del archipiélago de las Seychelles en el océano Índico, fue puesto en libertad el lunes.
El rescate hizo parecer pequeñas otras sumas pagadas anteriormente por barcos secuestrados por bandas marítimas somalíes. Una disputa entre dos grupos rivales piratas sobre los botines había retrasado su puesta en libertad.
Ecoterra International, un grupo con sede en Nairobi que supervisa la navegación en aguas de Somalia, dijo que dos piratas habían muerto en un tiroteo con una banda rival mientras volvían a tierra.
"El alijo del rescate récord (...) se encuentra supuestamente ahora en una casa fuertemente vigilada en Haradheere", declaró, añadiendo que había mucha tensión en el puerto dirigido por los piratas porque aún no había tenido lugar el reparto de los fondos.
