El español Arturo Villanueva Arteaga, de 32 años, detenido esta mañana en Belfast en virtud de una orden europea de arresto por delitos de terrorismo emitida por la Justicia española, comparecerá hoy ante un tribunal de Belfast, que decidirá sobre su extradición, informaron fuentes oficiales.
La detención se produjo en un barrio del oeste de Belfast, en una zona de mayoría católica, por agentes de la Policía norirlandesa (PSNI) para hacer efectiva una euro-orden de busca y captura "por delitos de terrorismo cometidos en España", explicó un portavoz policial.
El sospechoso, al que las autoridades norirlandesas identificaron como Arturo Villanueva Arteaga, es natural de Pamplona (norte de España), donde fue detenido junto a otras 14 personas el 6 de marzo de 2001 por su participación en la organización juvenil Haika, grupo supuestamente vinculado a la banda terrorista ETA.
Tras su detención permaneció en prisión durante 10 meses, hasta su puesta en libertad, que aprovechó para huir del país y eludir el juicio seguido a las organizaciones juveniles de la izquierda radical vasca.
Villanueva permanecerá ahora bajo custodia policial mientras comienza el proceso de extradición en el complejo judicial de Langaside, en Belfast, el mismo tribunal que decide sobre la extradición del ex preso etarra José Ignacio de Juana Chaos, quien reside en situación de libertad vigilada en el mismo barrio que el detenido.
