El presidente de Pakistán, Pervez Musharraf, desmintió hoy los insistentes rumores sobre su posible dimisión y exilio y advirtió de que no se quedará "quieto" si sus poderes son recortados.
"No me quedaría quieto si se recortan mis poderes", aseguró Musharraf en una entrevista con editores paquistaníes transmitida en directo por el canal de televisión Dawn.
El presidente, cuyo partido afín perdió las elecciones de febrero pasado, rompía así su silencio para defenderse tras semanas de rumores sobre su abandono voluntario del puesto, para el que fue reelegido en octubre pasado.
"No estoy preparado para convertirme en un vegetal inservible", declaró.
Tras insistir en que Pakistán necesita el camino de la "reconciliación" ante los llamamientos de algunas fuerzas para que dimita o sea destituido, Musharraf pidió no "socavar" el "prestigio" de la institución que él ostenta.
Al tiempo, sugirió que tampoco empleará sus poderes para disolver el Parlamento pues ello abocaría al país a la inestabilidad.
El presidente paquistaní aseguró que no desea "entrar en la confrontación" y conminó a seguir por el "camino democrático" que, según dijo, él inició con su abandono de la jefatura del Ejército y la celebración de las elecciones.
La intervención del presidente sigue a semanas de rumores de dimisión y de peticiones para que el Parlamento lo destituya por parte de la Liga Musulmana-N del ex primer ministro Nawaz Sharif, a quien Musharraf destituyó mediante un golpe de Estado en 1999.
