Tratar a las embarazadas yluego a sus bebés con cepas seleccionadas de probióticosayudaría a prevenir un problema de la piel llamado eccema enniños con antecedentes de alergia, en especial en los primerostres meses de vida, informó un equipo holandés.
Los probióticos son bacterias que se encuentrannaturalmente en el organismo y que a veces se agregan a losalimentos o suplementos alimentarios para reforzar el sistemainmune.
El eccema es un trastorno inflamatorio de la piel queestaría relacionado con las alergias.
El equipo de investigadores de Holanda le administró a másde 150 embarazadas con antecedentes familiares de enfermedadesalérgicas, una combinación de tres probióticos o placebo lasúltimas seis semanas de embarazo. Sus bebés recibieron el mismotratamiento durante 12 meses.
Ni las mujeres ni los médicos sabían si recibían losprobióticos o el placebo.
El equipo pudo controlar a 102 de los hijos de lasparticipantes. Durante los tres primeros meses de vida, lospadres de seis de los 50 bebés tratados con probióticos dijeronque los niños habían tenido eccemas, a diferencia de 15 de los52 bebés del grupo de control.
El equipo publicó los resultados en la revista Allergy.
Aunque la tasa de eccema en ambos grupos se volvió similar,a los dos años de seguimiento se mantenían algunos beneficiosde los probióticos.
En otras palabras: sería necesario tratar a seis pares demadres e hijos para prevenir un caso de eccema a los tres y alos 12 meses de vida y en casi 7 niños a los dos años.
Uno de los nueve autores del estudio trabaja en WincloveBio Industries B.V., en Amsterdam, que fabrica los suplementosprobióticos que se usaron en el estudio.
