El Premio Pulitzer a la mejor novela de 2008 fue para Elizabeth Strout por Olive Kitteridge. Publicada por Ramdom House, la obra reúne 13 pequeños cuentos, todos ellos localizados en un pueblecito de Maine, que tienen en común, según el jurado, una “prosa pulida” y a la protagonista de nombre Olive.
En la categoría de teatro el galardón fue para la obra Ruined de Lynn Nottage; en poesía para The Shadow of Sirius de W.S. Merwin y en historia para The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family firmada por Annette Gordon-Reed.
En el apartado de periodismo, The New York Times volvió a encabezar la lista, al hacerse con cinco premios por sus historias sobre el escándalo sexual que acabó con la prometedora carrera del gobernador de Nueva York Eliot Spitzer, la cobertura de la guerra en Afganistán y la situación en Pakistán y la revelación de que ex altos mandos militares metidos a comentaristas estaban al servicio del Pentágono para “vender” la guerra de Irak. Holland Cotter se llevó el premio al mejor crítico y Damon Winter por sus fotografías de Barack Obama en plena campaña electoral.
Los prestigiosos galardones fueron anunciados por la Escuela de Periodismo de la Universidad de Columbia de Nueva York. El diario acumula ya 101 desde que nacieron en 1917, ocupando el primer lugar de lejos. Sólo dos veces un medio ha ganado más de cinco en un solo año: el propio Times en 2002, cuando se hizo con siete, y The Washington Post, que se llevó seis el año pasado.
Entre el resto de grandes periódicos, Los Angeles Times se llevó un premio por un amplio reportaje sobre los incendios en la costa oeste y Eugene Robinson de The Washington Post por sus columnas sobre la campaña electoral del 2008. Cabe destacar la ausencia entre los ganadores de este año de The Wall Street Journal.
El primer premio entregado a un medio en Internet fue para la web politifact.com, creada por el St. Petersburg Times para comprobar las verdades dichas en la pasada campaña. El periódico local de Florida ganó también el premio al mejor reportaje de sucesos.
