Dos goles de Santi Freixa propiciaron el triunfo de España frente Argentina, a la que arrebató, de paso, el liderato de la clasificación y la situó de cara a la final del Trofeo de Campeones de Hockey Hierba.
El conjunto de Maurits Hendriks terminó con la condición de invicto de Argentina, que alcanzó la cuarta jornada de la competición como el cuadro más sólido.
Acusó el cansancio el conjunto sudamericano, que veinticuatro horas antes había certificado su triunfo, en el último instante, ante Holanda.
La situación clasificatoria obligó a España a tomar la iniciativa en el duelo. En el encuentro 150 como internacional de Alex Fábregas necesitaba la victoria el cuadro de Hendriks para mantener sus expectativas finalistas. Por eso salió con descaro a por el partido. Sin embargo, en el primer contratiempo, encajó un tanto. A los once minutos, cuando Facundo Callioni cerró con acierto una buena jugada individual para dejar equilibrado el duelo antes del intermedio.
A la vuelta de vestuarios el panorama transcurrió por una situación similar. Con la iniciativa en la mano y numerosas aproximaciones a la meta argentina, aprovechó un penalti córner que materializó Freixa para encarrilar el triunfo.
Argentina intentó neutralizar la renta española. Pero la defensa de Hendriks estuvo firme. Además, la rapidez de las transiciones a la contra suponían una seria advertencia para el cuadro de Carlos Retegui, que pudo encajar algún tanto más.
España, que se sitúa líder provisional, deberá certificar su pase a la final en el encuentro del sábado, contra Alemania. Argentina jugará el viernes contra Corea del Sur, colista de la tabla y el único equipo que aún no conoce el triunfo.
