El pleno del Senado confirmó hoy a Sonia Sotomayor como magistrada del Tribunal Supremo de EEUU, lo que la convierte en la primera hispana y la tercera mujer que ocupará uno de los nueve puestos de la más alta magistratura del país.
Sotomayor recibió 68 votos a favor y 31 en contra, estos últimos de la oposición republicana que, a lo largo del debate de confirmación, ha reiterado sus dudas sobre la independencia jurídica de la juez, de origen puertorriqueño.
La amplia mayoría de los demócratas en la Cámara Alta, donde cuentan con 60 de los 100 votos, condujo a muchos expertos y a gran parte del pleno a considerar la votación como un mero trámite desde que el Comité Judicial del Senado recomendara a Sotomayor la semana pasada.
En efecto, Sotomayor, nombrada para el cargo en mayo por el presidente Barack Obama, obtuvo el apoyo unánime de los demócratas, mientras que sólo 9 republicanos votaron a su favor. Desde su nombramiento, y a lo largo de las audiencias de confirmación, la minoría republicana ha basado su discurso en el temor de que Sotomayor haga "activismo político" desde el estrado.
La magistrada, que se crió en un barrio pobre de Nueva York pero se educó en las prestigiosas universidades de Princeton y Yale, jurará el cargo en una sesión especial que el Tribunal Supremo tiene programada para el mes próximo.
