La tenista Anabel Medina se impuso el miércoles por 6-2 y 6-3 a Virginia Ruano, en un duelo de españolas en la segunda ronda del Torneo de Andalucía. Por su parte, la estadounidense Serena Williams quedó eliminada, al igual que la local Silvia Soler.
Medina Garrigues, cuarta preclasificada del torneo, pasó a cuartos de final, mientras que la estonia Kaia Kanepi se impuso a Soler por 6-4 y 6-2 y avanzó a la siguiente ronda.
Por su parte, Williams, actual número uno del mundo, quedó eliminada en un partido de primera ronda contra la checa Klara Zakopalova, que se impuso por 6-4, 3-6 y 6-1.
La estadounidense era la máxima favorita del certamen que se disputa en Marbella en pista de tierra batida.
La número uno, que sufrió su segunda derrota en sus últimas dos presentaciones, perdió siete veces el servicio ante Zakopalova, quien ocupa el puesto 95 del ranking mundial.
Williams venía de caer el sábado frente a la bielorrusa Victoria Azarenka en la final del Abierto de Miami, y se mostró cansada debido a los problemas físicos que viene padeciendo.
En otro de los encuentros del miércoles, la rumana Sorana Cirstea, séptima preclasificada, venció por 4-6, 6-1 y 6-1 a la eslovena Anfreja Klepac, mientras que la italiana Roberta Vinci derrotó por 6-3 y 6-3 a la checa Nicole Vaidisova.
El martes, la serbia Jelena Jankovic, número cuatro del mundo y segunda preclasificada en Andalucía, aplastó a la italiana Francesca Schiavone por 6-2 y 6-1 en la primera ronda del torneo.
