La actual subdirectora de la Policía de Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, ha sido elegida hoy nueva presidenta del país con el apoyo de las dos terceras partes de los diputados del Parlamento.
Atifete Jahjaga, cuya candidatura fue pactada por las principales fuerzas políticas del país, obtuvo 80 votos, frente a los 10 que logró la otra aspirante al cargo, Suzana Novoberdaliu.
Jahjaga ostentará la jefatura del Estado durante un año, y con su elección se supera la crisis institucional ocurrida después de que el Tribunal Constitucional declarara ilegal el nombramiento del anterior presidente, una decisión que abrió la posibilidad de tener que convocar elecciones generales anticipadas.
Según la máxima instancia judicial, el Parlamento violó la Constitución al elegir a Behgjet Pacolli, ya que no consiguió el apoyo de dos tercios de los diputados, y el aspirante fue elegido sin que hubiera ningún candidato alternativo.
Jahjaga es la primera mujer en ser elegida presidenta del joven país, que en 2008 se independizó de forma unilateral de Serbia. También es el primer jefe del Estado que logra ser elegido en la primera ronda de votaciones.
La nueva presidenta tiene 35 años y está titulada por la facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Pristina. Tras el conflicto bélico de 1999 entre los separatistas kosovares y las fuerzas serbias, Jahjaga trabajó como traductora de las fuerzas policiales de la ONU, que administraba este territorio.
Posteriormente, se graduó en la Academia de Policía y ascendió rápidamente en el escalafón hasta alcanzar la subdirección de la Policía kosovar.
