Los caladeros del sobreexplotado bacalao en Europa están aún en peligro y las capturas han de recortarse en un cuarto el año próximo en todas las zonas salvo el mar del Norte, dijo la Comisión Europea el viernes.
El bacalao del mar del Norte está también en dificultades, pero no se puede tomar ninguna decisión sobre cuotas hasta el final de las conversaciones con Noruega, que gestiona conjuntamente los caladeros.
"En el caso del bacalao del mar del Norte, el canal oriental y el Skagerrak... las cosas han dado un giro a peor en 2008, cuando se capturó una proporción mayor que en ningún año anterior desde 1999", dijo la Comisión Europea en un comunicado.
Si el plan lo aprueban los ministros de Economía europeos en diciembre, los pescadores del oeste de Escocia también se enfrentarían a un recorte del 54 por ciento de las cuotas de merluza y de un 25 por ciento de las de pescadilla.
Sin embargo, las cuotas de arenques se incrementarán en un 12 por ciento en la región, donde los pescadores a menudo rechazan la intervención de Bruselas.
"Somos conscientes de las dificultades a las que hacen frente", dijo la experta en pesca de la comisión María de la Fuensanta Candela Castillo.
"Esta es un área que ha sido mal gestionada para detrimento de estas comunidades", añadió.
El responsable europeo de pesca pidió este año extender las reformas tras la sobrepesca durante décadas, que llevó a que el 90 por ciento de los caladores se situaran en niveles por debajo de la sostenibilidad.
Las flotas han crecido demasiado, las multas son demasiado bajas para disuadir a quienes sobrepasan las cuotas y los pescadores se ven forzados cada vez más a localizar y capturar el menguante número de especies.
