Los ministros de Pesca de la Unión Europea (UE) han decidido hoy prohibir las artes de fondo en zonas donde se identifiquen ecosistemas vulnerables en aguas del Atlántico sur Occidental, cerca de la Patagonia, donde faenan 20 barcos españoles.
El Consejo de pesca de la UE ha aprobado por unanimidad una regulación para proteger las zonas vulnerables, como los corales o los montes marinos, en caladeros que no están regulados por organizaciones regionales pesqueras, lo que en la práctica supone que la decisión afecte al área del Atlántico sur occidental.
Los Veintisiete han acordado que si en este caladero se detecta un ecosistema frágil y "no hay un informe científico que demuestre que la pesca no es agresiva", se prohíban las artes de fondo, según fuentes comunitarias.
Asimismo, los ministros han respaldado una petición de España y han eliminado una propuesta de Bruselas que pretendía establecer que no se pescara a una profundidad superior a los 1.000 metros.
La propuesta aprobada incluye también la presencia de observadores a bordo de los barcos que faenan en el caladero del Atlántico sur occidental.
Para España, es positivo que el reglamento tenga en cuenta los estudios científicos a la hora de identificar los fondos vulnerables como base de las prohibiciones, según han explicado fuentes del Ministerio del Medio Rural y Marino.
Por ejemplo, este año el barco oceanográfico del Ministerio Miguel Oliver ha obtenido los primeros resultados del cartografiado de los fondos marinos en el Atlántico sur Occidental.
