El español Alejandro Valverde, del Caisse d'Epargne, se mantiene al frente de la general de la Dauphiné Liberé tras la disputa de la etapa reina, séptima y penúltima de la carrera, en la que se impuso en solitario el francés David Moncoutié, del Cofidis.
Alejandro Valverde mantuvo con clase el tipo en la dura jornada entre Briançon y Saint François Longchamp, sobre 157 kilómetros, con las superdificultades en el camino del Galibier, la Croix de Fer y un final en alto.
El ciclista murciano, que aún no sabe si podrá estar en el Tour de Francia, pasó sin dificultades tanto por el Galibier como por la Crioix de Fer, y sólo tuvo que exprimirse para defender el liderato en los últimos 12 kilómetros de ascenso. Pero no hicieron mella en él los crueles ataques de Evans y Contador
Moncoutié ganó en solitario con 41 segundos de ventaja sobre el holandés Robert Gesink (Rabobank), segundo; el australiano Cadel Evans (Lotto), tercero; y Alejandro Valverde, cuarto. Alberto Contador (Astana) acabó a 55 segundos tras perder comba en los últimos metros.
Alejandro Valverde afrontará mañana la última etapa vestido de líder, por delante de Evans y Contador. El último viaje será entre Faverges y Grenoble, sobre 146 kilómetros.
David Moncoutié, de 34 años, volvió a ganar en la Dauphiné Liberé diez años después de su primer triunfo. El escalador francés se marchó ya en solitario en el ascenso a la Madeleine, tras dejar atrás al suizo Mathias Frank.
El francés llegó a disponer de dos minutos y 30 segundos de ventaja a los pies del puerto de la Madeleine. Nadie pudo darle alcance hasta la meta en Longchamp.
Se trata del segundo triunfo de la temporada para Moncoutié tras una etapa en el Tour del Mediterráneo, en el Mont Faron.
Alejandro Valverde afrontará mañana la última etapa vestido de líder, por delante de Evans y Contador. El último viaje será entre Faverges y Grenoble, sobre 146 kilómetros.
