La minorista Wal-Mart Stores ampliará su oferta de servicios rebajados de telefonía móvil en todo Estados Unidos, lo que incrementará la presión sobre rivales como Leap Wireless International y MetroPCS.
Las acciones de Leap y MetroPCS cayeron después de que Wal-Mart anunciara el miércoles la expansión del servicio a más de 3.200 de tiendas, tras un programa piloto en 234.
El servicio lo desarrolló TracFone Wireless, unidad de la empresa de servicios móviles mexicana América Móvil, del multimillonario Carlos Slim.
La oferta incluye un plan prepago de 30 dólares por 1.000 minutos, así como otro mensual de 45 dólares para llamadas ilimitadas. El servicio opera en la red de Verizon Wireless, una alianza de Verizon Communications y Vodafone Group.
Aunque muchos inversores esperaban que las pruebas se expandieran por todo el país, el anuncio subrayó la creciente competencia para Leap, MetroPCS y otros.
"Esto claramente representa una mayor competencia para todo el sector de móviles, en particular, en planes ilimitados de pago por adelantado, en los que Leap y MetroPCS probablemente sean lo más afectados", comentó un analista de Soleil/Nelson Alpha Research, Michael Nelson.
Wal-Mart dijo que ofrecerá los planes en todo el país desde el 18 de octubre tras un programa piloto llevado a cabo en 234 tiendas durante el verano. La empresa indicó que la respuesta de los consumidores al programa fue "aplastante."
