Los soldados extranjeros que han muerto en la guerra afgana ascienden a 701 en lo que llevamos de 2010, el año más sangriento desde el inicio de la invasión, según datos del portal virtual independiente icasualties.org.
Los 493 soldados estadounidenses fallecidos componen el grueso de las víctimas mortales de este año, seguidos por los británicos (101 bajas), los franceses (16) y los canadienses (16), de acuerdo con esos datos.
Desde el inicio del conflicto, en el 2001, han muerto en Afganistán 2.271 soldados extranjeros, por lo que las bajas sufridas este año suponen en torno al 30 por ciento del total.
El cómputo desglosa además las causas de las muertes e incluye tanto los casos de soldados que perdieron la vida por fuego o acción del enemigo (623 muertes), como de aquellos que fallecieron en accidentes o acciones no hostiles (78 muertes).
Las muertes de militares extranjeros se han incrementado de forma casi constante: los decesos anuales superaron el centenar por primera vez en 2005 (131) y desde entonces han aumentado, con 191 muertos en 2006, 232 en 2007, 295 en 2008 y 521 en el año 2009.
El pasado mes de junio fue además el más sangriento para las tropas extranjeras desde el inicio de la invasión, y la única ocasión en la que se produjeron más de 100 muertos en un mes (102) entre sus filas.
Los talibanes, que han afianzado su presencia en grandes áreas del país en los últimos años, buscan tanto la expulsión de las tropas extranjeras como el derrocamiento del Gobierno de Hamid Karzai para proclamar en su lugar un régimen integrista islámico.
El jefe de las tropas internacionales en Afganistán, David Petraeus, asumió durante la toma de posesión formal de su cargo, el 4 de julio en Kabul, que la guerra afgana se encuentra en un "momento crítico".
